Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I have a scanner at home. Can I scan my originals myself and send you electronic files?

A. Yes, but we prefer if you post the originals to us so we can obtain the best possible quality scan. We recommend doing all scans at 600 dpi (optical) on a quality scanner.

Q. Is it safe to post fragile photos to you for scanning?

A. In general yes. The scanning process will not harm the images. Posting has a small risk of damage or loss but you can do a lot to make this risk minimal. Be sure to package the images correctly. A good way is to put them between 2 or 4 sheets of cardboard, taped shut all the way around to prevent them from sliding to the edge, and send them by recorded or registered delivery.

Q. I don't have a scanner but still don't want to post my originals - what do I do?

A. Some local print shops offer quality scanning at very affordable prices. Take your originals there to be scanned and ask for the scanned files on a CD. Then you can either upload the files from the CD or send the CD to us. You could even hand deliver your originals to us, but please call first to make sure we are available.

Q. How do you determine the cost for a restoration?

A. There are some general guidelines on our pricing page, but so many factors (damage, size, special requests etc) determine the final "categorization" and price that there is no fixed formula. We price each project separately and only after seeing the images. All quotes are of course free of charge and with no obligation - but we think you will find our prices very competitive.

Q. I am doing genealogy research on my family and have a whole collection of old photographs to be restored. Do you offer discounts for large orders?

A. Yes. Feel free to contact us and we will work out a special deal for you.

Q. But I'm not sure what service best matches what I want.

A. No problem. Send us your photos anyway. Don't forget you don't pay for Compass Foto Fix to work on your photos, you only pay once you have seen the finished image if you are completely happy. If you are happy with the enhanced image, but uncomfortable with our price, you can still walk away without spending a penny - there's absolutely no financial risk to you, so why don't you give us a try?

Q. I have a digital image to send you, can I send you that?

A. Absolutely. Just email the image to us (max 5 MB), not forgetting to include your home address and a contact number.

Q. The final image doesn't look like I thought it would. What can I do?

A. Talk to us. It's possible we mis-interpreted your instructions, or there may be some limitations due to the content or quality of the original image. We keep your original image, and work on a copy, so we can have another go at no additional cost to you - you would still only pay for the final image. Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction, and we hope every customer will be delighted with the results of our service. That's why we don't charge a penny up front, and our customers are free to decline the purchase of the final image without prejudice.
